Planning permission has been secured for a swanky new hotel in the heart of Bethnal Green.

One woman stands in the way of “progress”… Granny.

Granny lives in the last remaining house on Paradise Row, behind an abandoned bookshop. She’s barricaded herself inside, armed with a small arsenal of homemade defences, and is refusing to sell.

Developers who have entered the house to “talk sense” into her have come running out screaming — if they’ve come out at all.

Now the developers are desperate. They’re offering a generous reward to anyone brave enough to enter Granny’s house, survive the encounter, and convince her to sell.

Will that be you?

DISCLAIMER: There are unconfirmed reports of booby traps, an elaborate DIY security system, and previous visitors failing to return calls.

The Game

Granny is an escape room — but on an epic scale.

Instead of a linear sequence of puzzles across one or two rooms, Granny unfolds across an entire seven-room house. There is no prescribed order. You decide where to go, what to tackle first, and how to approach your mission. Those choices matter — and they’ll shape your experience.

The challenges you’ll face are far more varied than in a traditional escape room. We find padlocks boring! Expect physical puzzles, environmental games, hidden mechanisms, and systems that respond to your actions as the house comes alive around you.

This is a non-linear experience. Solving one puzzle doesn’t simply open the next door (in fact, all doors are unlocked throughout). Progress comes from exploration, experimentation, and piecing together the story. As you move through the house, you’ll uncover fragments of Granny’s past — and those discoveries can change what tools and information are available to you. Even the in-game clue system must be unlocked through your actions.

The scale of the house allows teams to spread out, split up, and work in parallel. Granny plays comfortably with as few as four players and up to eighteen, and many smaller teams complete the experience successfully. Success isn’t about numbers — it’s about communication, creativity, and how well you adapt under pressure.

F.A.Q.s

Will I still enjoy this even though I am not a horror fan?

This event is designed to create fear, paranoia and anxiety in its participants and has been given a fear factor of 4/5. If you don’t enjoy feeling afraid, then this probably is not the experience for you.

Is Granny a traditional escape room?

ScreamWorks’ productions are unique, so don’t expect Granny to be like a traditional escape room or anything you have done before. You need to enter with an open mind leave all expectations at the door. If you are the kind of escape room player who likes to ask for clues, then this is not a good choice for you. Remember, its a non-linear open-world adventure so Granny is not designed to be solved on a room-by-room basis; some of the puzzles require you to move around the house or to be in different rooms at the same time to solve them.

What can I expect from Granny?

Granny is a non-linear open world escape game, which means that there is no set order to the puzzles and all seven rooms are open to you throughout. You will have 60 minutes to work together as a team to plan and execute your escape, while trying to avoid Granny’s unpredictable patrols.

What happens if Granny catches me?

Well, that would be telling! But don’t worry, all Granny wants to do is love you.

Can Granny touch me?

You will not be touched by Granny (or anyone) and you must not touch Granny.

What is the age restriction for attending Granny?

The age restriction is 13+, but under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Can I come on my own to visit Granny?

Presently, all bookings for Granny are private bookings (i.e. you will not be joined by other members of the public) and our minimum booking quantity is four persons. From time to time we will release Public timeslots where solo travellers or individuals can join together to form a group. Email us at info@screamworks.co.uk if this is of interest to you.

How long does the experience last?

60 minutes of game time.

What is the difficulty level of this game?

We have given this a difficulty rating of 4/5. The puzzles unfold in an open-world environment without traditional clues, which can feel unfamiliar to those used to a more structured escape room. But don’t worry — everything is designed to make sense, with intuitive signposting and logical progression. Most groups quickly find their rhythm and discover exactly what they need to do. Presently, as at 24/11/2025, the success rate is approximately 20%. But, win or lose, you will have fun whatever the outcome of your experience.

Are there live actors?

Yes. Granny might be ancient, but she ain’t dead yet.

Is there somewhere secure to leave my bags?

Yes. Your belongings will be stored in lockers in the bookshop.

Can I bring my phone into the experience?

Yes — but with a few important conditions:

If you choose to bring your phone (or any other personal items) into the house and lose it during the game, we can allow only five minutes for retrieval before the next group must begin. After that, you’ll need to schedule a separate appointment to return and collect it.

The house is large, dimly lit, and filled with places where items can be easily misplaced. For that reason, we strongly recommend the following:

  • Keep your phone on loud (not silent or vibrate)

  • Enable voice activation (e.g., “Hey Siri” / “OK Google”) so we can help locate it quickly if needed

We’ve never had a guest permanently lose an item at Granny, and we’d like to keep it that way. But please remember: if you bring valuables into the experience, you do so at your own risk — and we cannot delay other guests if you’re unable to keep track of them.

Do you have a customer toilet?

There is one toilet available during the experience — but it’s Granny’s bathroom, and you’ll need to find it first. Once the game begins, you can use it at any time… if you’re brave enough to enter. We strongly recommend using the bathroom before you arrive. Many guests stop at Mother Kelly’s nearby for a pre-show drink — they are happy for you to use their facilities and if you show them your Granny ticket, you’ll receive 10% off your bill.

Can each member of my group pay individually?

The minimum cost to reserve a timeslot is 4 tickets. If you’re planning to visit Granny with a group larger than 4 and want others to pay separately, just purchase 6 tickets in one transaction to secure your slot. You’ll receive a confirmation email with all the instructions — including a booking link and password — so your friends can add themselves to your timeslot later.

I have a physical disability, is this event suitable for me?

The experience takes place on a single level and does not involve crawling. However, due to the layout of the building, it is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible.

Some areas have uneven surfaces and low or intermittent lighting, so there is a degree of physicality involved that may make the event unsuitable for those with limited mobility or balance concerns.

If you have accessibility needs, we strongly recommend getting in touch with us before booking, so we can discuss your specific requirements and advise accordingly.

If you’re registered as needing a carer (e.g. via DLA or equivalent), we’re happy to provide a free carer ticket. Just email us at  info@screamworks.co.uk

I am pregnant, is this event suitable for me?

The experience may involve moments of physical intensity, startle effects, and an unpredictable environment — all of which make it unsafe during pregnancy.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes with a good grip – trainers are perfect. Please avoid high heel shoes or any shoes which have a smooth leather bottom, like formal wear.

Can we buy a gift voucher for this experience?

Not for Granny, yet. She is still deciding how long she will be visiting for. But you can absolutely purchase gift vouchers for any of our other year-round experiences.

Is this event suitable for corporate bookings?

Absolutely. Granny is able to accommodate up to 18 simultaneous players, which makes this an ideal choice for corporate team-building events.

How do we access the footage from our experience?

Please note: this system is currently in beta and is provided as a gesture of goodwill — we cannot guarantee availability, functionality, or technical support. Access is only granted if all members of your group check in. Make sure you have mobile data as you will need the internet to check-in.
